The Truce at Bakura

Kathy Tyers

Summary

Still reveling in their victory at Endor, the Rebel Alliance's celebration is cut short when an ancient Imperial message drone from the Outer Rim is intercepted by Rebel patrols. The message it contains is disturbing indeed, speaking of invading aliens who have the power to harness the Force energies of the dead to wreak mass destruction on whole systems. The Alliance faces a dilemma. Should it ignore this desperate last plea from an Imperial colony and concentrate on strengthening its own defences? Or should it send a force to fight these aliens and perhaps risk destruction by the very foe it thought it had vanquished?

Pros

It was a shock to me at first to see Imperials allying themselves with the Rebellion. Unthinkable! But after a while it became interesting, especially with the political intrigue that was going on even on a little backwater planet like Bakura. The book as a whole was well-written and thought out. Tyer's characters stay true to the movies and her ability to construct a whole new alien race and culture in such detail was amazing. I also really like the appearance of Anakin Skywalker to Leia; a nice touch to acknowledge Leia's parentage. And the last paragraph of the book was wonderful...one of the best ending paragraphs of any book I've read.

Cons

It took me a while to get into this book. The plot was interesting but I felt it wasn't paced very well. It proceeded in jerks, sometimes quick and fast-paced, and sometimes plodding on with pages of people doing nothing. I also felt the end was a bit unclear. Pter Thanas' defection to the Rebellion seems rather sudden. On one page he's a die-hard Imperial, on the next he's a loyal Rebel? It doesn't seem probable. Dev Sibwarra's death was sudden also. Yes, he would have to die because there is no mention of him again in future books. But it didn't seem to fit with the plot and it seemed really an anticlimax. Tyers also did not fully explain how Gaerial's relationship with Luke Skywalker evolved. Throughout the novel she emphasizes Gaerial's distrust of the Jedi; then in the last chapter he kisses her and she leaves, never to see him again. Explain, please!?!
